Imphal, March 15 2011:
Pointing out the importance of neurological treatment in the state, MLA, O Joy today alleged that the government lacks in taking up initiatives to provide neurosurgery treatment facilities in government hospitals.
O Joy stated this during the discussion for passing ' 80 crore supplementary demands for grant for development of infrastructures at JNIMS in the House of the State Assembly.
Moving a cut motion in the House, the opposition member said despite the increasing importance of neurosurgery treatment facilities in the state, the government has done little to provide such facilities in government hospitals.
He however lauded the efforts of the government in developing infrastructures in the JNIMS to bring up the institute to the status of AIIMS.
With no facility in JNIMS and RIMS, patients needing neurosurgery treatment have to be referred to hospitals in Guwahati or to private hospitals like the Shija hospitals.
As such type of treatment is very expensive, many poor people remain unable to bear the huge expenditures Joy said, asserting that such treatments cost at least ' 70,000 .
He also said if there are no specialists then there is no use of developing infrastructures for neurosurgery treatment and he urged the government to appoint neurosurgery specialists.
The healthcare delivery system being provided at RIMS hospital is unsatisfactory.
Government should draw the attention of the concerned Union ministry to improve the services of the hospital, Joy added.
Replying to O Joy's observations, Chief Minister said that government was well aware of the problems and difficulties being faced by the people of the state while going outside the state for medical treatment.
With the completion of the infrastructure development, government will appoint specialists in the field of neurology, nephrology, cardiology, etc.
The infrastructure development is being taken up even though the state has limited resources, he added.
