Imphal, February 17 2009:
Noting the fate of the students of six principals of higher secondary schools who have been suspended, the Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has appealed today the government to revoke the suspended principals and teachers of higher secondary schools in order to make educational institutions a 'free zone'.
In a press release, A Thoithoi, secretary of education and academic affairs, DESAM H/O, stated that the students' body plainly supported the demand raised by the All Manipur Higher Secondary Lecturers' Welfare Association for the revocation of the suspended principals and teachers.
However, it stated, the students' body doesn't support the decision of the teachers' body to boycott the coming HSLC and HSSLC examination while appealing the teachers to take their decision after thoroughly discussing the matter.
The statement also said that it would be wrong on the part of the groups (who had imposed ban on participation in Republic Day celebration) to exert pressure on innocent teachers to follow diktats while saying that instead of pressing the teachers it would be right if the concerned groups had informed the matter (ban) to the head of departments concerned and leaders of the government.
It further went on to say that it would also be appreciable on the part of the government not to take harsh action against persons who they think could not hit back.
It stated that it is a well known fact on how far the teachers who are with no security guards would dare not follow the diktat of an armed group.
The statement appealed the government to revoke the suspension order of the principals and teachers taking into account their contributions in the field of education at the earliest time possible while expressing hope that the matter will be amicably solved before the start of the HSSLC examination by the authority concerned.
