Imphal, November 25 2009:
Elangbam Suraj, eldest son of Late MLA, E Kunjeshwor, will now be the official nominee of Congress for contesting the bye-election to 14-Yaiskul Assembly Constituency to be held on December 19 next.
A meeting of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee held at Congress Bhavan, BT road here this evening, under the chair of its president, Gaikhangam, has approved him to be the official nominee of the party.
The meeting of the MPCC was held at 4 pm at the Congress Bhavan as soon as its president Gaikhangam arrived at Imphal from New Delhi.
Chief Minister, O Ibobi who returned with his wife, MLA Landhoni, also attended the meeting.
According to MPCC president, Gaikhangam, three persons applied for party ticket to contest the bye-election.
They were Elangbam Suraj, son of Late sitting MLA, E Kunjeshwor, sitting Councilor of IMC, Gandhi @ Jaydev and president of ISTV Network, Kh Kulleshwor.
After thorough consideration of the applicants, the Election Committee of the party has recommended Suraj.
Today's party meeting has also given its approval to the candidature of Suraj, MPCC president, Gaikhangam said.
The Congress High Command in New Delhi will be intimated regarding nomination of Suraj as the party candidate, he informed.
Gaikhangam said, with full of cofidence, that the party candidate will win the election, and hoped that the bye-election would be conducted in a free and fair manner.
In reply to a question raised by reporters, Gaikhangam said, the SPF government is trying its best to end the present impasse with the agitating groups.
The agitation is not related with the bye-election.
If there is a beginning, there should be an end-point.
He further said, all strategies have already been chalked out for campaigns.
If need arises, party leaders from the Centre will be invited for electioneering to woo the voters.
He also clarified that he had been to New Delhi in connection with the coming election.
A detailed report of July 23 incident will be submitted to the high command.
He refused to comment further on his recent Delhi visit.
