Imphal, September 13:
Despite the large scale damages wrought by the recent flood, the Panchayat election to be held in the valley districts of Manipur will be held as scheduled on September 19. To ensure the success of the election, the Election Commission is working overtime.
To discuss whether it would be feasible to hold the election as scheduled a meeting attended by the four Deputy Commissioners of the valley districts, officials of the Election Commission and chaired by the Chief Minister was held today.
The Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister was also present at the meeting.
During the meeting, the DCs submitted the reports submitted to them by their SDOs in connection with the damages wrought by the flood and the reports were discussed minutely.
As the flood situation has improved with the water level in the major rivers receding, the meeting decided to go ahead with the election as scheduled earlier, said a well placed source.
With the flood not having a hard impact on Imphal West, the DC had earlier submitted to the Election Commission the reports of the SDOs which stated that election can be held without much difficulty all over the 353 polling stations in the district as scheduled.
After minutely discussing the matter as well as the reports submitted by the SDOs to their DCs, the meeting today decided to hold the election on September 19 as fixed earlier.
The Election Commission has been asked to ensure that the poll is held successfully.
