Imphal, February 04 2010: Assam Rifles have reportedly adopted the three surviving children of late Angom Chanbi of Phayeng.

Chanbi was found murdered after being raped together with her eldest daughter.

Speaking to media persons at Phayeng today, Chanbi's brother-in-law (husband's elder brother) Angom Ingojao (51) said that a team of 39 AR took away the three children yesterday with the assurance they would take care about their well-being as well as education.

Earlier on February 2, the AR team visited the family and enquired about requirements of the children.

They said that the children would be better off with them.

The mother-daughter duo is survived by Sonika (13), Dingku (9) and Rita (7).The AR team came back last afternoon and took away the children.

Former MLA of Sekmai A/C Ningthoujam Biren said that the local people gave consent to the AR's proposal to adopt the children on good faith.

However, it is reported that a meeting was being held between the JAC constituted in connection with the murder and family members at the residence of the former MLA and resolutions of the meeting was being awaited.

The former MLA decried that the State Police were half-hearted in their investigation into the double murder case and that it was making little progress.

On the other hand, information received from Assam Rifles said that it was being considered to send the three children to a school of the family's choice or put the two girls in a children home related to IG AR (S) while the boy may be admitted in the AR school located at Mantripukhri.

Following the departure of the three children, their house located at Phayeng Nongaban has been completely deserted.

The local people were deeply hurt on seeing the children leave their native village.

They alleged that the children taken away by AR on the promise of bringing them up have been handed over to a children home.
