Guardians call for resolution to impasse

Imphal, October 14 2009: A joint meeting of guardians held today in connection with the ongoing class boycott agitation of AMSU, MSF and KSA to demand the resignation of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh on moral ground and punishment of the police commandos involved in the July 23 Khwairamband Bazar incident, has called upon both the Government and the agitation student bodies to ensure resumption of normal classes by October 21 .

Hosted by All Manipur Students' Guardians Organisation (AMSGO), the meeting held at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen here adopted three different resolutions and led to formation of a 21-member co-ordinating committee of the guardians.

The resolutions adopted are to call on the Government to ensure resumption of normal classes by October 21; to submit a memorandum to the Governor on October 22 if the Government fails to give a positive response in this regard; to appeal to the agitating student bodies as well to call off the class boycott agitation in the interest of the young students who are the future pillars of the society by October 21, and to take up the matter with the related authorities of the Central Government if no positive responses were forthcoming to these demands.

The meeting of the guardians proceeded with president of All Manipur Students Guardians Organisation Rev Y Rehang Chothe, working president N Chaoba, general secretary Yaima, advisor N Tomba and RV Minthing gracing the dais as presidium members.

Before taking any definite resolutions, the opinions of the participating guardians were allowed to be aired.

They maintained that depriving education to the students, who are future pillars of society, as a result of the July 23 Khwairamband Bazar incident is unfortunate while on the other hand it is unbecoming of a responsible Government not to listen to the voice of the people.

Furthermore, they pointed out that education has also always been protected and made a free zone even during times of war.

So the Government of Manipur should ponder over who would be the sufferer if the students continue to be deprived of their right to education.

While calling upon the State Government to take up necessary measures so as to ensure resumption of normal classes in schools and colleges, the guardians also advised the agitating student bodies to call off the class boycott and take up some other democratic form of protest.

Meanwhile, a similar joint meeting of the teachers and guardians of the private schools in Jiribam was reportedly held today to discuss the prevailing scenario in the aftermath of class boycott agitation and called upon the Government and the agitating student bodies to bring about any amicable solution so as to ensure resumption of normal classes.
