Compared to the opening day score of 51 goals in six matches yesterday the second day of the 11th Sub-Junior (U-16) national Hockey Championship at Khuman Lampak Hockey stadium today yielded 67 goals in seven matches.
While six of the matches were one sided affair with the winning sides sounding the opponent boards repeatedly, the Jharkhand and West Bengal tie in the afternoon session turned out to be anti climax as neither side managed to open the score account.
While Delhi and Nagaland started the second day�s competition with the former emerging comfortable 8-1 winner to open its points account in two matches so far, Mizoram won its second consecutive match of the championship with a 7-0 rout of Kerala in another morning session match today.
However, the main highlight of the day�s competition was 26-0 debacle of Tripura by strong title contender Orissa and Haryana humbling Uttaranchal 20-0.In the last match of the day, Andhra Pradesh romped home by 4-1 victory margin over Chandigarh.
Complete dominance of Orissa boys over their rivals could be ascertained from the fact that as many as 25 penalty corners were produced by the winners with nine of them converted into goals.
On the other hand Tripura did not have any penalty corner in their favour.
With the Orissa score opener coming within seconds into the match Tripura boys were found struggling to redeem some pride with their backs to the wall as the Orissa players virtually laid siege at the opponent�s goal area before racing to an unassailable 18-0 lead by the end of first half.
The second half also gave no respite to the Tripura boys who conceded eight more goals as Orissa strikers turned the match into a goal riot and pip one another in the score race.
Banamali Xess eventually emerged as the highest scorer at six goals closely followed by Anil Kullu with five strikes at the Tripura board, four from Nuel Tirkey while Dilip Xaxa and Ashis Anmalmini tied at three goals apiece.
In the other lopsided contest, Haryana converted four of seven penalty corners into goals with the half time score board placing the winners eight goals apart from Uttaranchal who forced only two penalty corners in the entire match.
Jagwant Singh fetched seven goals for Haryana, as Yudbir Singh contributed six and Parven Kumar sounded the Tripura board on three occasions.
Satish Kumar scored six goals in Delhi�s win over Nagaland which was also the second straight loss for the latter in as many days.
Mudit Garg and Parshant Kumar also featured among the Delhi goals while the Nagaland face saver came through Atuo Kariitso.
Mizoram�s 7-0 drubbing of Kerala came through compact team work as six of its players featured among the goals with Krosthianghlima the only scorer to manage two goals.
The Andhra Pradesh goals in the 4-1 win over Chandigarh came through V Krishna Kishore (2nd, 51st) and S Teja Babu, who converted two penalty corners in the 13th and 27th minutes while Surjit Singh reduced the latter�s loss margin with a 56th minute strike.
The win is Andhra Pradesh�s second successive victory of the ongoing championship.
Meanwhile, Indian Hockey Federation officials are reported to have conveyed to the championship organisers to change competition format insisting on applying pre-quarter final phases against the previous norm of direct entry to quarter finals for pool toppers.
The latest IHF instructions has also compelled the organisers to conduct nine matches tomorrow so as to make up for absence of Bihar, Andaman and Nicobar, Mumbai and Maharashtra teams.
