Imphal, September 20:
While condemning the September 16 incident of the gang-rape and murder of Salam Punam of Nongmaikhong, Manipur University Students Union (MUSU) has expressed serious concern over the escalating incidents of crime against women in Manipur.
In a statement, MUSU president Ashokumar said the escalating incidents of crime against women in Manipuri society is not a healthy trend and it shows symptoms of the malaise deep within the society.
The Manipuri society will be marching to its own doom if timely action are not taken up to stop crime against women as men and women have equal role to play in the society, Ashokumar said.
The student leader observed that in the history of human civilisation, no society which suppressed women had ever progressed.
Although the September 16 incident is condemnable, expressing condemnation alone would not bring any solution.
