A fortnight long National Inter-Disciplinary Performance Workshop for Women was kicked off today at JN Manipur Dance Academy.
The workshop is being organised by the Department of Art and Culture and the Forum for Laboratory Theatres of Manipur under the sponsorship of North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC), Dimapur.
The inaugural function was graced by Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University Prof C Amuba, Art and Culture Commissioner P Bharat, Sangeet Natak awardee Th Suryamukhi and NEZCC Joint Director Tali Nokcha as presidium members.
Giving key note address of the opening function, project director of workshop Lokendra Arambam said that the main objective of the workshop is to let young girls of the North East understand the values and principles of contemporary art of dance.
It is also an attempt to synthesise the experiences of other contemporary disciplines such as theatre, music, visual arts, poetry, ritual, film and multi media.
Another objective of the workshop is to enable young artistes of the region negotiate the problems of conflict, human rights and the agonies of human condition through the composite art of theatre-dance, Lokendra said.
Addressing the gathering, Prof C Amuba noted that it's time for proper documentation of the traditional art forms which have been undergoing changes continuously.
On the opening day today, Jati Devi presented the dying art of Moirang Shai in the native opera tradition.
Renowned dancer Astad Deboo also performed today.
Further, Assamese Bihu and contemporary fusion dance numbers were also presented to the delight of the audience.
