Imphal, September 25 2009: Members of the JAC formed in connection with the gunning down of two Happyland villagers and burning down the village chief's house called on the Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh this afternoon and urged for tracking down perpetrators of the criminal acts.

The JAC members reportedly had a lengthy talk with the CM on the issue in addition to submitting a memorandum containing five demands.

Besides demanding that the criminals be produced and punished, the JAC representation also proposed security coverage of Happyland and nearby villages, payment of Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia to family members of the two victims as well as appointment of the victims' next of kin with suitable Government job, and extension of compensation to the village chief for reconstruction of the house.

The JAC insisted that the demands be translated into action within September 27 .

Speaking to some media persons after meeting the CM, JAC spokesperson and president of Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long (Tangkhul Youth Council) Zanyo Varam said the Chief Minister assured to extend all possible assistance within October 15 .

He nevertheless reminded that taking into account the CM's assurances to implement the demands within October 15 the bodies would be claimed for conducting religious rituals.

As had been mentioned in memorandum agitations would be launched in case the assurances are not translated into action within the stipulated deadline, Zanyo added.

It may be noted that on September 23 unidentified armed persons had abducted Happyland village Church's clerk Joyson Ningkhan (35) and board member of the local school Venture Shaiza (38) besides setting aflame and fired shots at the house of the village chief Vareso Luikham (42).The abducted duo were found shot dead the next day near the same village.

On September 21 also two persons namely Laithangbam Regan (30) of Chingnungkhok and Soreishang (26) of Tungkoi village were abducted from Happyland and their bullet-riddled bodies recovered the next morning at Nongren Chingkhong.

Villages of the victims are located close to Happyland.

These incidents had caused fear in the nearby villages consequently triggering mass displacement.

To stabilise the tense situation gripping Happyland and nearby villages a public meeting was held at Chingnungkhok today.

Besides a unanimous decision to promote peace and strengthen age-old relationships amongst the neighbouring villages the meeting also culminated with the formation of a JAC and appointment of office bearers.
