Imphal, January 31, 2011:
Manipur People's Party (MPP) has urged upon the Union Government to set up a separate High Court for the State of Manipur at the earliest.
In a memorandum addressed to the President of India, the Prime Minister and Union Law Minister, the MPP reminded that the Union Minister of Law had already given assurance for opening of separate High Courts for Manipur and Tripura.
It is expected that a bill shall be produced before the Parliament in the coming budget session in February with regard to opening a separate High Court.
With all the seven Northeastern States kept under Gauhati High Court, the rights of the people of Manipur regarding delivery of justice to the door step has been deprived and denied resulting in undue suffering to the poor public.
Since the High Court is regularly sitting at Guwahati, the senior Judges are unable to know the identities of the persons to be appointed as Judges from the place.
On the other hand, a large number of cases are pending in all courts in Manipur which is only increasing because of the absence of a High Court in the State, the MPP pointed out.
It also urged upon the Union Government to stop all appointment of Judges in the High Court from Manipur till the opening of a new High Court.
