Two vehicles smashed ahead of relaxation of bandh

Imphal, May 13 2011:
Windshields of at least two Maruti vans carrying passengers were smashed by bandh supporters today at a place between Lokchao and Leingangtabi under Moreh police station as the indefinite bandh along the Imphal Moreh section of NH 39 was being enforced.
The indefinite bandh was called by Leibi village demanding transfer of the Chandel DC.
They alleged him of arbitrary demarcation of the boundary between Leibi and Kwatha without the consent of villagers of the two villages.
The bandh commenced from May 8 .
The two Maruti vans, MN01W-9207 and MN04-6464, which were heading from Moreh to Imphal with passengers, were smashed by suspected bandh supporters after stopping them between Lokchao and Leingangtabi today at 8 am, a report received here said.
The vehicles were driven by Md Wahid Ali and Md Ramizuddin, both from Sora village of Thoubal.
The drivers and passengers were escaped without any injuries, however, the vehicles were badly damaged in the attack carried out by pelting stones and hitting with sticks, the report said.
The vehicles were trying to head to Imphal leaving behind the security escort.
Government has been providing security to the movement of all vehicles on this route since the next day of commencement of bandh on May 8 .
With the smashing of two vehicles today, bandh supporters have so far damaged at least five vehicles so far.
Meanwhile, the bandh has been relaxed till May 25 with effect from today evening following a talk between the agitating Leibi villagers and chairman of the Chandel Autonomous District Council this afternoon.
On what condition villagers agreed to relax the bandh could not be confirmed till the time of filing this report.
