Imphal, June 20 2010:
The Assam Rifles has categorically rejected report by State dailies that personnel of the para-military force were involved in the June 17 incident at Finch Corner, Ukhrul district.
Reacting to the report, an Assam Rifles statement, enclosing note of clarification by the individual concerned, said the Assam Rifles taking serious note of the reported incident conducted a thorough investigation after which it came to light that AR personnel were not involved in the case.
Even the owner of the hotel whose name was published in newspapers has confirmed that no Assam Rifles personnel were involved in that incident, said the statement while opining that "the incident seems to have been carried out presumably by some miscreants with an apparent motive of disturbing the existing peace in Ukhrul district and to disrupt the 'bonhomie' which is prevailing between the locals and Assam Rifles" .
further conveying that the AR has assured the local community and leaders of social organisations that Assam Rifles would continue to extend its support to the people of Ukhrul and acts of misdemeanour, if any, shall be thoroughly investigated for initiation of suitable action against the guilty, the statement asserted that HQs 10 Sector is already in receipt of a testimony from the persons involved in the incident duly signed by them reposing faith in the Assam Rifles in maintaining peace and tranquillity in Ukhrul district.
On the otherhand, a confessional statement of R Isaac, Khangamung Rainei and Philakor Rimei said on June 17 night some persons in civil dress and military uniform in two white Gypsies came and broke open the door.
Seven members of my (Isaac's) family, who were asleep were dragged outside half-naked and beaten up, the confessional comment attached to the AR release informed while asserting that no statement was made to the media that Assam Rifles personnel from Shangshak never harassed them.
We do not know who were involved in the incident, it said and affirmed full faith upon the AR in maintaining peace and tranquillity in Ukhrul district.
