Imphal, November 29 2009:
An Immigration and Customs Post would be opened at Moreh Gate No 2 in January next year.
Under instruction from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the State Government has entrusted Chandel Deputy Commissioner to prepare project proposals for the customs post in consultation with the people of Moreh.
The new initiative is aimed at giving a boost to Indo-Myanmar border trade through Moreh.
The customs post would be constructed from Border Area Development Fund.
At present, official trade between the two countries is done at Moreh Gate No 1 although the border trade is extended to Moreh Gate No 2 at Namphalong market in Myanmar.
But the volume of trade is restricted to the quantity one can carry on the head.
Even as the annual volume of cross border trade through Moreh reached Rs 10 crores some years back, it has been reduced to mere Rs one crore in a year at present.
Many merchants and traders earlier engaged in border trade through Moreh have either given up their profession or switched to other routes because of security reasons.
