UNLF cadre involved in ambushes on security forces held

Imphal, April 30 2011:
Police have charged an arrested self styled lance corporal of the banned UNLF outfit of being involved in a major attack on a police team in 2004 that killed three constables and injuring another.
Self styled lance corporal, Chingakham Bijen (28) son of Chandramani Singh of Andro Kharam of Thoubal district was arrested by a team of Imphal East district police commandos on April 9 last, during a counter insurgency operation near St Joseph School under Yairipok PS of Thoubal district.
A Chinese made hand grenade was recovered from his possession and he was booked under section 17/20 UA (P) Act and 5 Explosive substances Act of the IPC.

He had been re-arrested on April 20 last in a case registered to the police station on April 22, 2004 .
The case was related with an encounter with a team of I/W district police commandos at Laphupat Tera, 17 km southwest of Mayang Imphal PS in which three constables were killed and one constable was injured.
The 'Lance Corporal' had been involved in the attack that took place around 4 pm of the day, police charged.
Before he was produced in the court of the Imphal West Chief Judicial Magistrate on Thursday, he had been formally arrested by a team of Churachandpur police on the charge of involving in a case related with an attack at the CRPF post in Churachandpur in July 2004.In the wee hours of July 12, 2004, at about 1 am, some unknown armed persons suspected to be PREPAK and UNLF activists fired upon at the camp of 14th Bn CRPF located at the community hall, Churachandpur, half a kilometre south of Churachandpur PS with rocket shells and lethode bombs.
The CRPF personnel returned fire, which last about 35 minutes.
In that one constable no.881121191 namely Khemyar Meena got minor injuries in the shoot out.
One unexploded rocket shell was found inside the community hall.
Churachandpur police registered a case under section 121/121-A/307/326/34 IPC, 25 (1-C) A Act and 13 UA(P) Act of the police station.
Police charged him of being involved in the attack and he was taken into remand for six days, till May 3, an official source said today.
