State observes World Veterinary Day

The XI World Veterinary Day was also observed in the State today under the aegis of the Manipur State Veterinary Council at Sanjenthong here with Veterinary Minister N Loken as chief guest.
Speaking at the occasion, Minister N Loken said that the World Veterinary Day was being observed across the world on the theme Rabies.
He drew attention of the veterinary officers and scientists to pay more attention on preventive measures against casualties caused to mankind due to bite by mad dogs.
Highlighting the need to take extra precautions on the part of medical practitioners against transmission of diseases from animals to human beings, Loken noted that the Veterinary Department has been enduring several difficulties for the last 10 years due to ban on recruitment in the department.
Veterinary Department is not about vaccination of cattle and pet animals alone, it is rendering its service in many other fields.
He further informed that necessary sanctions have been made for opening a biology science laboratory.
Principal Secretary (Veterinary) IS Laishram lamented that officers of Veterinary Department have not been promoted nor their salaries increased in the last 10 years.
Noting that the Veterinary Department is lagging behind other departments, IS Laishram said that the department has asked the MPSC to conduct DPC about five months back.
But the DPC could not be conducted due to absence of the MPSC Chairperson and the Member.
At present 44 seats are lying vacant in the department.
Manipur State Veterinary Council president Dr Th Jeevan said that rabies has been killing one man every 10 minutes in the world.
Saying that the Veterinary Department is working to control rabies, Dr Jeevan highlighted the importance of collective efforts on the part of scientists, officers and the Government to create awareness about the disease among the people.
In the technical session, RIMS Department of Microbiology Head Dr Ng Brajachand, Dr Ng Ibotombi of the Directorate of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry and Disease Specialist of the Department Dr K Gopal presented paper on topics related to rabies and its prevalence in Manipur.
The World Veterinary Day was also observed at the Veterinary office of Jiribam under the theme 'Rabies' .
A free anti-rabies vaccination camp was also organised by the office in connection with the World Veterinary Day where around 100 pets including dogs and cats were vaccinated, reports our Jiribam correspondent.
