The ingenuity of criminals know no bounds.
Manipur too has produced a number of ingenious frauds and gangsters and after The Sangai Express blew the lid off of some cases involving fake appointments as well as a single employee working in two different capacities in Government Departments, now comes the story of a policeman held on charges of posing himself as a member of a militant group and trying to extort money from the public.
Disclosing this, a well placed source informed The Sangai Express that a Constable of the Criminal Investigation Department (Crime Branch) was arrested along with his accomplice while trying to extort money from a grocery shop at Mantripukhri today at about 11 am by posing as members of a militant group.
The Constable and his accomplice also used guns to threaten the shop keeper, said the source.
The CID Constable was arrested while he was trying to extort money from the shopkeeper by a combined team of Heingang police and Imphal East police commandos, said the source further.
The arrested Constable has been identified as one Matuimi Tangkhul and his accomplice as Khabong Tangkhul.
Heingang police have registered a case against the two.
One revolver along with 12 live bullets were recovered from the possession of the two, said the source adding that the gun recovered is the service weapon of Matuimi.
The SP of Imphal East has also informed the SP of CID, Special branch of the arrest, informed the source.
Matuimi is presently posted as the Personal Security Officer of Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency, Mani Charenamei.
The Constable is likely to be suspended after an inquiry, said the source.
SP of CID, Special branch P Dhanakumar informed that three PSOs are provided to the MP and added that while the two reported for duty today, Matuimi had taken the day off.
