Imphal, July 04:
While disclosing that from out of around 10,000 people he had operated upon during the course of the last 30 years that he has been working as a Gynaecologist, only four patients related to complicated cases including Sonibala have died, Dr Sukumar has appealed to the JAC formed in connection with the death of Sunibala to relax the restrictions imposed on him on humanitarian ground.
Talking to mediapersons at his Keishamthong Hodam Leirak residence this afternoon, Dr Laishram Sukumar asserted that he has been discharging his duty as a Government doctor since 1987.He joined the service as a Gynaecologist in JN Hospital and now he is the head of department of Gynae of the Hospital.
Since he is posted in the hill districts of Manipur most of the time, Dr Sukumar said he is not a doctor who is well known in his locality as well as by other people.
However, wherever he had been posted, he had treated and taken care of the medical needs of many pregnant mothers without any complaint from the patients or their parties.
During the past 30 years of his medical career, Dr Sukumar said he had operated upon around 10,000 Gynae related cases.
Out of these, only women who have complicated cases have died.
The case of Keisham Ongbi Sonibala of Nambol was such case, he said .
However, the allegation that he had given Rs 2 lakhs to the family members of one Ch Ganga of Nambol Kongkham Leikai who died in December, 2006 during child birth after the operation allegedly performed to settle the matter is totally unfounded, Dr Sukumar said.
He asserted that Ganga was not his patient at all so question of giving money to her family members does not arise.
Finally, Dr Sukumar appealed to the JAC formed in connection with the death of Sonibala to lift the ban imposed on him against working in any of the medical institutes for life on humanitarian ground.
Meanwhile, the State Working Committee of Indian Medical Association (IMA), Manipur State Branch has strongly condemned what it described as' acts of pre-mediated vandalism at Leirik Memorial Maternity Hospital and Dr Sukumar's residence at Hodam Leirak after the death of a patient.
In a statement, State Secretary Dr Ch Nabakanta Sharma said such acts would disturb doctors from attending to serious patients which will be against the interest of the general public.
He noted that any grievances against the doctors may be dealt with within the laws of the land.
