Imphal, January 08 2010:
Rejoicing over the prospect of resumption of normal classes after a prolonged suspension following the July 23, 2009 incident, the Senior Citizens for Society has hailed both the Apunba Lup and the State Government for arriving at an agreement.
Speaking to media persons at their office today, president of the Senior Citizens for Society N Binoy recalled that students were deprived of education for four months starting from September 9 last because of the indefinite class boycott called by AMSU, MSF and KSA in the aftermath of the brutal killing of July 23 .
The prolonged impasse between the Apunba Lup and the Government was finally resolved by the two sides today.
This was a welcome step, he remarked.
Asserting that the right to education is entitled to all students, Binoy observed that today's agreement have saved both the Apunba Lup and the Government from a possible major issue that might result from prolonged denial of education to students.
Taking part in the press meet, secretary of the society Khaidem Mani said that today's agreement was not based on fulfilment of demand(s).
The breakthrough was provided by the Gauhati High Court's directive to hand over the case of July 23 to CBI and subsequent acceptance of the directive by the State Government.
Negotiations between the Government and the Apunba Lup started on October 31 last at the initiative and request of the Senior Citizens.
The final round of talk was held today with representatives of the Society, Apunba Lup, JACs of Rabina and Sanjit and the State Government which a truce was signed.
Meanwhile, it is reported that annual meeting of the Senior Citizens for Society would be held on January 21 .
The meeting would deliberate on armed conflict and insurgency.
