'Lecher' Maiba thrashed

Imphal, May 07 2011: In addition to subjecting to a good thrashing, the house of a Maiba (local medicine man) has been attacked by an enraged mob on alleged charge of molesting a 13-year old girl on the pretext of treating her.

Mother of the victim has claimed that she caught red-handed the Maiba identified as Wahengbam Manglemjao alias Gouramohan (60) of Khurai Thongam Leikai under Porompat police station while molesting her minor daughter at his house where they have gone for treatment today morning.

The victim is also reported to be from a locality of Khurai and she is said to be studying in a private school in class VII .

When news of the incident spread, a large number of people comprising the family members of the victim and local residents gathered at the house of Manglemjao in the afternoon and subjected him to a good thrashing before attacking the house.

In the ensuing melee, some of the attackers who were armed with pointed weapons reportedly stabbed a son of the Maiba.

The injured son identified as Rajen (30) has been admitted to Shija Hospital.

He was stabbed at the stomach.

The injured Maiba has also been admitted to JNIMS for treatment.

Arrival of police managed to bring the situation under control.

But before the arrival of the police, the mob had already caused damage to four two-wheelers kept in the house of Manglemjao, other household items.

According to the mother of the victim, Maiba Manglemjao was consulted in connection with the treatment of her daughter since yesterday.

As Manglemjao had told them, the mother and the daughter went to Manglemjao's house at around 10 am today for performing certain rituals in connection with the treatment.

They had taken only Chengpak (crushed rice) along with them today as the Maiba told them to so during the consultation yesterday.

But today, while making the arrangements for performing the rituals today, the Maiba at first said pointed out that betel nut was missing.

So, the mother made the arrangement and provided it to the Maiba.

Later on, the Maiba asked for sugar again.

The mother was returning from shop along with the sugar that the Maiba had asked, when he was seen pulling up his garment and committing the despicable act, the mother of the victim recounted while talking to the media.

On the other hand, the family members of the Maiba have asserted that the alleged victim was showing symptoms of mental problem.

It is condemnable that a mob swooped down and beat up the Maiba and ransacked the house without saying anything, they claimed.
