Even as there has been apprehension that the all-time favourite dish 'Yongchak' is on the verge of extinction, villagers under Kasom Khullen subdivision in Ukhrul district are going to make a big harvest on Yongchak this year.
Indications of big harvest have been felt during the tout conducted by ICHAM, TAKL and media persons recently in the subdivision.
The large scale flowering of Yongchak trees could be seen by the touring members, which was also a necessary show stopper in admiration.
It may be mentioned that, there was hot discussion in the state last year on the extinction of Yongchak trees in the state including experts and scientists from Manipur University and Central Agriculture University.
Later, awareness has been spread among the people that the decaying of the trees is caused due to the presence of insects in the trees.
Residents of Kasom Khullen subdivision have also expected big harvest of the favourite dish item this year.
According to the locals, this area has, fortunately, not been affected by the dying down of the trees.
Yongchak is produced in large extent at Ileng, Henglon, Khunphung, Drona and Barack range in Tamei subdivisions of Tamenglong district and in parts of Churachandpur, Senapati, Chandel and Ukhrul districts.
