Billowing flames devoured a two-storeyed house cum shops at Nagamapal Khwai Brahmapur, here today.
A lot of property valued around Rs 50 lakh had been reduced to ashes in the inferno.
Fire tenders from the head quarter of the Fire Service took more than an hour in their battle to put the fire under control.
No casualty has been reported in the incident.
The incident took place at about 2.30 last night.
The building belongs to one Hajarimayum Shajinkumar (44), son of late Gokulchandra, and his family is housed on the top floor of the building.
Four shops at the ground floor had also been destroyed by the raging fire.
The top floor of the building constructed with wood has been considerably damaged by the fire.
According to the family, Rs 1 lakh in cash for family expenditure, gold taken as mortgage from other people had been among the destroyed property.
Properties worth about Rs 50 lakh had been lost in the fire.
It is believed that the fire broke out from an electric short circuit on the ground floor in one of the four shops which sells Ngari.
The other three shops deal with jewellery.
