Imphal, August 23 2009:
About 200 protesters including leaders of women bodies led by Apunba Lup today held a protest demonstration in the courtyard of the residence of Congress MLA I Hemochandra of Singjamei constituency at Chingamakha.
The prostesters assembled in the courtyard of the MLA around 4.30 pm today.
Police immediately rushed there and tried to disperse the protesters when MLA Hemochandra arrived and intervened.
He asked the police team to stay away from the spot while he talked to the protesters.
The police team went away and stayed about 50 metres away from the residence.
The MLA then talked to the representatives of the protesters.
Expressing disappointment and anguish over the police actions to quell the people's movement being carried on in protest against the July 23 incident of Khwairamband market, the women leaders demanded that Chief Minister O Ibobi should resign, action should be taken against DGP and Imphal West SP, those commandos who were directly involved in the Khwairamband market killings must be dismissed and given appropriate punishment for murder and also the volunteers of Apunba Lup who had been arrested and booked under NSA should be released at once without any condition.
After patiently listening to the demands and grievances of the women leaders, MLA Hemochandra assured them in the most convincing manner that he would place the demands before the Chief Minister, O Ibobi.
The protesters then peacefully dispersed from the area.
