Imphal, January 13 2010:
Elangbam Suraj, who was been elected in the by-election to the Yaiskul Assembly Constituency recently, has been sworn in as a member of the 9th Manipur Legislative Assembly on the opening day of its 7th session today.
Speaker Dr Sapam Budhichandra administered the oath of secrecy and office to Suraj in the presence of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, his Council of Ministers and other Ruling and Opposition MLAs during a simple ceremony in the hall of the State Assembly.

Suraj was elected in the by-election to the Yaiskul Assembly Constituency held on December 19 by defeating his nearest rival Independent candidate Hanjabam Jayadeva by a margin of 943 votes.
The by-election was necessitated following death of its sitting MLA and father of Suraj Elangbam Kunjeshwore.
On the first day of the 7th session of the 9th Manipur Legislative Assembly today, the House also expressed condolence over the death of six former MLAs.
The six departed MLAs were Ng Mono Monsang, K Sonkothang Ashhon, RK Udoy Sana Singh, Hawaibam Shyamo, Md Abdul Matalif and Elangbam Kunjeshwore.
The Manipur Assembly also observed two minutes silence as a mark of respect to the departed souls.
