Imphal, August 30:
On the occasion of the International Day Against Disappearances, the FIDAM (Families of the Involuntarily Disappeared's Association Manipur) has appealed to the President of India to take up immediate necessary steps to make the Government of India a party to the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance and to repeal the Armed Forces Special Power Act.
A memorandum submitted to the President, FIDAM hailed the efforts of the United Nations towards complete abolition of the phenomenon of enforced disappearance and towards delivering justice to the families traumatised and victimised by the phenomenon.
FIDAM also conveyed hope that the Government of India will assure its commitment to fight the phenomenon of enforced disappearance to the people of Manipur, particularly the families undergoing the endless trauma of waiting for their loved ones.
It further reminded of the recommendation made by the Second Administrative Reform Commission on Public Reforms set up by the Union Government on August 31, 2005 to repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act.
