Noted academician, human rights activist, and former dean of Law Faculty of Gauhati University, Prof Naorem Sanajoaba @ Sanajaoba Naoria passed away at about 3.40 pm today at Shija Hospitals where he was hospitalised.
He was 68 .
He is survived by his wife RK Radhesana, who is a Reader in the Department of Chemistry, DM College of Science, a daughter and a son.
He breathed his last less than three hours after release of the third edition of his book "Manipur Puwari -Kunmathoi Suba Chahi Cha" at 1 pm at a function held at Nupilal Memorial Complex here.
Prof Sanajaoba, who was also the first elected president of All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), was born on December 30, 1945.He was the son of Naorem Loknath of Mayang Imphal, who later shifted to Khurai Lairikyengbam Leikai in Imphal East district.
He was a well-known human rights defender.
He also worked hard to protect right to food and right to life.
Educator and active anti-colonial campaigner in the sensitive North-Eastern states of India, he had contributed to creative discourses and critical perspective of the contemporary era.
He was Dean, Faculty of Law and Member of the GU Court of the Gauhati University, with a teaching career since 1966.He was the President of All Manipur Students Union in 1965, and a social activist as well in the third-world scenario.
His original and edited works include Human Rights in the New Millennium, published by Manas Publications, Manipur: Past and Present, Vol.
I to IV, Current Legal Essays, Manual on International Humanitarian Law, Manipur: Treatise and Documents, Manipur: a British Anthology, Vol.1&2, Notes on Industrial Tribunal, Human Rights: Current Issues, Rights of the Oppressed Nations and Peoples, Mioibagi Hak-21 suba Chahicha, Manipur Puwari: Kunmathoi Suba Chahi Cha, 1st, 2nd & 3rd edition, which has made a good standing among all kinds of readers.
In addition to it, he has published more than 1000 articles in various reputed journals and periodicals on various legal and contemporary themes relevant with the region of Northeast and global peace.
The lifeless body of the noted personality has been brought down at his residence at Khurai Lairikyengbam this late evening from the hospital.
The last rites will be held tommorw at 1 pm, family source said.
