Imphal, January 04 01 2010: The State Cabinet has taken note of the directive of the Gauhati High Court for CBI investigation into the controversial July 23 Khwairamband fake encounter.

Contending that Chungkham Sanjit was killed by police commandos in a fake encounter, her mother Taratombi filed a petition at Gauhati High Court Imphal Bench praying that the City Police be directed to register a case and investigate the incident.

Then Taratombi filed another petition praying for CBI enquiry into the July 23 killings as well as to instruct City Police to hand over the FIR related to the incident to CBI.

Subsequently, the High Court issued a directive asking the State Government to order a CBI enquiry into the killing.

A Cabinet meeting held this morning with the Chief Minister in the chair deliberated on the Court directive and decided to follow the order.

A senior Minister in the SPF Government said that the emergency meeting held today studied the Court directive minutely and unanimously agreed to it.

Notably, following the petition filed by Sanjit's mother at the High Court, City Police registered a case and investigated into the incident.

According to the progress report of the investigation presented at the Court, two small arms have been recovered and statements of seven commando personnel have been taken.

The Special Investigation Team of Manipur Police have also taken statements of two reporters and the Editor of Delhi based news magazine Tehelka.

Meanwhile, Chungkham Anandi, elder sister of late Sanjit, talking to this reporter said that CBI can establish the facts and circumstances leading to the death of his younger brother.

She reposed her faith in CBI investigation.

On the other hand, a meeting of the JACs of Rabina and Sanjit was held today in connection with the Government's agreement to CBI enquiry into the Khwairamband killings.

However, the meeting did not take any decision.

The two will be holding another meeting tomorrow.
