Imphal, December 24: A private member resolution raised by MLA S Ibohal in the concluding day of the State Assembly Winter session yesterday regarding introduction of Meetei Mayek script in place of the Bengali script in the Government schools from the coming academic session has been rejected by the House after a thorough discussion.

MLA S Ibohal while raising the private member resolution opined that the State Government should open a cell in the State Education Dept and begin introducing Meetei Mayek classes in the Government schools.

Joining in the discussion on the private member resolution, Opposition leader Dr Nimaichand Luwang expressed his support to the resolution and urged the House members to introduce Meetei Mayek scripts in all the schools instead of quarrelling unnecessarily over the matter.

Raising a point of order in the House, Ruling MLA Y Irabot said that no one was putting up any sort of opposition on the Meetei Mayek matter but hastened to add that it would be improper to discuss the matter right now as the matter is presently being fought in a law court.

Expressing his views on the resolution raised Chief Minister O Ibobi said that a Language Development cell had already been set up in the Education Dept for promoting Meetei Mayek in the Govt schools.

However, nothing concrete has been taken up till today on account of the differences among the Meetei Mayek supporters.

Meanwhile, a private member resolution raised by M Nillachandra and S Natuirt regarding setting up public settlement and Govt institutions on the hillocks located in the valley were also rejected by the House.

Raising the resolution, Natum and Nillachandra said that Govt should take steps and prohibit construction of private houses or Govt offices on agricultural land and instead such buildings should be built in the hills located in the valley.
