International Day of Non-Violence observed

Thirteen different organisations which believe in Gandhian philosophy jointly organised the 5th International Day of Non-Violence at State Guest House today.
Padmashree RK Jhalajit and URICC President M Ibohal graced the occasion as chief guest and functional president respectively.
Senior Citizens for Society president N Binoy Singh, Mahila Kalyan Samiti president S Sarju Devi, Sarvodaya Mitra Mandal president Prof L Sadananda and National Youth Project president Prof Ksh Bimola Devi were also present as presidium members.
RK Jhalajit while speaking at the function said that everybody must follow the path of non-violence as nothing can be achieved by using violence as a means.
N Binoy while delivering his speech lauded Irom Sharmila for taking the means of satyagraha to press her cause.
Regarding Sadar Hills standoff, N Binoy suggested to resolve the issue through satyagraha and talks.
S Sarju exhorted all to pledge support to the cause of Sharmila in order to repeal the draconian AFSPA.
Remembering that Mahatma Gandhi always wanted to uplift women, S Sarju noted that the country and State would achieve development only when women are empowered.
Advocate Khaidem Mani flayed the State Government for not taking up measures to end the ongoing economic blockade.
He also decried the Government for turning deaf ear to the cause of Irom Sharmila even though she has been on fast since past one decade.
In the evening session, a symposium on the topic, 'Gandhian concept of non-violence' was held with RK Jhalajit as the moderator.
Prof L Sadananda, Prof Ksh Bimola and A Jiteshor spoke on the topic, 'Satyagraha and Sharmila', 'Gandhian Economy' and 'Power of Gandhian Non-Violence' respectively.
The gathering also paid floral tributes to the photograph of Mahatma Gandhi.
Observance in Ukhrul: National Students' Union of India (NSUI), Ukhrul branch also observed International Non-Violence Day at Ukhrul Higher Secondary School today, reports our Correspondent.
Over 150 students from different schools of the district took part in the essay and spot painting competitions held in this connection under the theme, 'peace' .
AS Shimreiyo, President District Congress Committee graced the function as chief guest.
Angayam L Shimray and Yungreichon Chiphang, both from Alice Christian Higher Secondary School got first and second positions respectively in the essay competition while third prize went to Thotchipem A Shimrah of Vision Unique School.
In the spot painting competition, Thotreimung of Zenith English School, Vaongam Raihing of Ukhrul Public School and Yesmin Chisti of Little Angels' Higher Secondary School got first, second and third prizes respectively.
The first position holders were awarded with Rs 1000, second with Rs 700 and third with Rs 500 .
10 students were also given consolation prizes and a certificate was given to all the participants.
