At least 14 women who came to protest against the Khwairamband market killing of July 23, while Chief Minister O Ibobi was unveiling a newly constructed statue of Thangal General at Konung Mamang on the occasion of the Patriots' Day, were arrested by Imphal East police today.
The Chief Minister was unveiling the statue, after offering tributes at the tombs of Thangal General and at Hicham Yaicham Pat, Moirangkhom and Palace Compound when the protesters marched towards the site.
Late Sanjit's elder sister, Anandi, was among the 14 persons arrested by police.
The other protesters arrested by police were convenor of the JAC Against the Killing of Sanjit Th Anita, six other secretaries and six activists of the Apunba Lup.
Following the arrest, Lamlong Market was shut down even as a large number of women attempted to storm Porompat police station.
They demanded release of the arrested women protesters.
Earlier, around 50 women activists of the Apunba Lup marched from the office of the Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi at Khoyathong till Porompat police station through North AOC.
However, they were blocked by Imphal West commandos at North AOC.
After a brief altercation, SDPO Imphal West came to the scene and he took the women till Minuthong.
The SDPO then selected 12 from the Apunba Lup activists and took them to Porompat police station where the women activists talked with the Porompat OC.
