The pain behind her silent tears
Depiya Thoudam *
In the midst of sorrow and grief,
She weeps silently in the darkness
Her soil soaked with her own tears
Of countless nights of distress
'A jewel of India' is what she is called
Jeweled by nine beautiful hills
With the string of love and fraternity
Is what she has been told
Unexpectedly a storm of hatred battered her
She got shrouded in a grisly sight
Of one she had never imagined
The uncontrolled fire of communal tension
Reducing thousands of homes to ashes
Countless dreams and hopes to dust
Families torn asundered by unseen lines
Of that start and end nowhere
The unquenchable flames of anger
Burning each thread in the fabric of trust
Casting the shadows of despair everywhere
She now bears the weight and scars
Of the violent strife and rift so wide
With wounded heart from multiple stabs
Of endless cycle of pain and agony
Chained by unspoken fears and fright
She longs for relief and peace to reign
Through her tears she call for change
For all her children to unite and rise
To mend the wounds and bridge the rift
To douse the flame of animosity
And let the seeds of tranquility sprout
And flower once again on her lap
Where answer to every question is love
And goal of every soul is peace.
In the midst of sorrow and grief,
She weeps silently in the darkness
And silent tears hold the loudest pain.
