Of Man and Salmon
Pukhrambam Singh *
Human beings are just like
Salmons of the Pacific North.
You are born up-stream
And venture out to explore
To grow in the vast ocean
And learn how to navigate danger
Yet surviving in deep water.
When the time comes though
You return to the place
You call it birthplace and hometown
The place you love the most
Even more than most beautiful places.
You share your knowledge and wisdom
With fellow-beings and children
Tell tales of your life experiences.
Life is not a bed of roses
Danger lurks around in front and back.
Nevertheless, remember when you are 50 years old
There is always a story to tell.
When you pass down acquired knowledge
To the next generation
Then you leave this world
Peacefully
Knowing fully that you have done your part
On this beautiful place called Mother Earth.
