Make in Manipur # 1
Dr H Birkumar Singh *
The CSIR: North-East Institute of Science & Technology, Branch Laboratory, Lamphelpat, Imphal in collaboration with the CSIR: Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai have designed and fabricated more than 50 novel products based on ethnic designs and fabrics of Northeast particularly from Manipur.
These products are designed with the help of CAD (Computer Aided Designing). The main objective of the program is to utilize the immense and unique designs and resources of northeast to fabricate novel products that is generally used by mass people resulting to employment opportunity and income generation.
More than 80 per cent of the raw materials required for the products should be from northeast while a small parts/portion of the product which is not manufactured or produced in northeast should be brought from outside the northeast.
The above 3 ladies bags are designed with precision layout and background. Attention has been made to keep the price of the products as low as possible so that these products are affordable to common mass people. The other products will be displayed in the subsequent issues of this paper.
These products are high and export quality having huge demand outside the region and in abroad. We have received a lot of appreciation about these products from many countries have requested us for bulk supply.
These products can play a vital role in the program of “Make in India” conceptualized by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi and also in the Act East (Look East) Policy.
These high quality products with proper logo can be proud and branded products from this state.
The quality of a product is basically based on a few parameters like
(i) Use of Good/High quality raw materials
(ii) Stricture to the dimensions
(iii) Perfect hand of the fabricators
(iv) Fabrication using with high quality equipments/machines
(v) Standarization/monitoring/checking of the products before going out from the factory, etc.
Our Centre at Lamphelpat is now well equipped with many high industrial equipments including CAD/CAM, digitizer, plotter cutter, 3-phase electrical stitching machines, strobel, skiving, hydraulic clicking machines for fabrication of the novel products.
Entrepreneurs/NGOs/SHGs can take up this venture in large commercial scale for which the necessary knowhow and technical support can be provided by our Institutes.
