Play Review of Victor Thoudam's It's A Myth

Performing arts group Akhoka's play "It's a Myth" was presented at Manipur Dramatic Union Hall on 30th March 2017. The play's concept and design was done by budding theatre director Victor Thoudam and directed by Victor Thoudam himself. The play was a part of National school of drama extension programme cum production in Collaboration with Akhoka.

Synopsis of the play: It's a Myth

SCENE 1
Starts from an empty space and things are placed into it so that a 'Play' can start. From that our inquisition our curiosity leads into another path.

SCENE 2
They wander seeking what is that leading into another rhythm. They are carried away into the different rhythm.

SCENE 3
The rhythm of our hopes, dreams and desires are shattered unable to understand why it is happening.

SCENE 4
Someone tries very hard to change the situation causing hassle and tussle between them.

SCENE 5
A time comes where everything falls apart.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

MAIN THEME OF THE PLAY

We are changing and evolving everyday and every moment as time passes by. We never know what will we become as time goes on. There are lots of things happening simultaneously and not necessarily in the same time and space. We live in a time period where most of the things are disjointed, unrelated even if we are ought to relate to each other.

Sometimes there is an abrupt discontinuity from yesterday to today or just after the next moment. And within a system we are disconnected, we feel that we are responsible for it but we hardly try to change it or just express what we think about it. We remain a silent observer. We tend to forget the joy of being the simple child like and instead turn ourselves into more sophisticated beings resulting a system of disorder and creating the space of tragic.

But we always believe that things are better and will become best. Are we sure about this trajectory of becoming better or has it been idealized just like a Myth? Using the rhythm, body and sound of the artiste, it is an experiment to undergo such boundaries. It is still a process and hope it still remains a process.

About the director

Alumni of national school of drama, specialized in acting in the year 2012. Awarded one-year fellowship program by NSD under the guidance of Late Shri Heisnam Kanhailal and Sabitri (Ema). Studied in London International School of Performing Arts (LISPA) under the Charles Wallace India trust Scholarship awarded by the British Council.

ABOUT THE GROUP

AKHOKA was founded in the year 2013 on 19th July to promote peace and harmony within ourselves and thus with the environment through the fields of theatre and performance, music, dance and allied activities to expand the canvas of these human activities. Akhoka has produced some short conceptual performances before and also involved in activities promoting bridges between different communities basically through arts and cultures.

Through this play, the director tries to portray the disconnected system of the society. And through this medium, the play conveys the message that we, the people must not remain a silent observer. It is a play of overcoming boundaries.

We hope, in the near future, people would get the chance of witnessing more of such plays.
