BJP central to numerous current issues : Beef ban to NTC’s stand

Beef ban or the ban on the sale of cattle to slaughter houses, PMUY to be launched on June 5 in the State, the decision of the State Government to enact a new law to ban bandh and blockade, the Naga Tribes Council (NTC) urging the Centre to spell out the details of the Framework Agreement to the Nagas of Nagaland, the brutal murder of a mother and her daughter at Uripok Bachaspati Leikai and obviously the incessant rain that hit the State in the last few days and caused floods and in the process swept away some bridges, were all the prominent news that hit the daily newspapers in Manipur in the last 48 hours.

This is not an exercise in recapping the incidents of the last two days, but just highlighting some points which may be deemed to be central to all these news.

Apart from the brutal murder of the two women on May 30 and the incessant rain that has lashed the State for the last few days, the BJP may be said to be central to all the other events.

Even in these two cases, focus will be on the BJP led Government here on how it deals with the flood and the murder of the two women.

A reminder that Manipur does not lack news making events and all those in the profession of disseminating information to the public will stand by this observation.

The beef ban or the ban on the sale of cattle to the slaughter house is a pan India fact and is not confined to Manipur alone, but central to it is the BJP.

Likewise the demand put forth by the Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) is a question that concerns the BJP and so is the decision of the State Government to enact a new legislation to ban bandhs and blockades.

Ban bandh, blockade agenda of the Government will certainly earn good points for the BJP and this is something which the N Biren Singh Government will not need to look to Delhi to get its act going.

However the call issued by the NTC, while it concerns the Nagas of Nagaland alone, surely puts a question mark on the BJP as a whole and not only on the State unit of the BJP.

The very statement of the NTC should itself tell the story of some section of the Nagas of Nagaland ‘feeling left out’ of the much tom tommed Framework Agreement signed between the NSCN (IM) and the Modi Government back in 2015 and while this does not say anything about the BJP in Manipur, what will be its fallout in the hill districts here, particularly in the Naga dominated districts is a question that is bound to be interesting to all the keen watchers of the ongoing peace process between the NSCN (IM) and New Delhi.

Again the BJP may not be central to the issues arising out from the brutal murder of the two women on May 30, but as the party in power here, the BJP Government will need to tread carefully and see how the case can be cracked before the issue takes a bigger and uglier turn.

Not that this is the first time that multiple issues have come up within a short period of time, but it will be interesting to see how the Government deals with all these issues.
