Prof. Dr. TH. Robert Tiba from Manipur came all the way to Bangalore, along with his wife R K Bijeta Sana, to get treatment for his fractured arm, but their dream was shattered, as sheer medical negligence cost him his life. He died at HOSMAT Hospital, Bangalore, on February 8, 2010, after successful arm surgery.
Prof. Dr. TH. Robert Tiba, Head of Dept in History, Assam University, hailing from Tumuyon Khullen, Senapati District, Manipur, met with a road accident in Assam and fractured his left arm on January 25, 2010.
He was administered first aid at Zion Hospital, Dimapur, on the same night. To get the best medical attention, he and his wife flew down to Bangalore immediately the next day and got admitted to HOSMAT Hospital. He was operated on January 27 morning. The surgeon informed that the surgery was successful.
Post surgery, Prof Robert complaint of pain and therefore the doctors and nurses administered some drugs both orally and by injection.
Random and repeated administering of drugs caused stiffness to his body and consequently slipped into coma. A relative who was attending him immediately alerted the nurse but was said that it was normal. It took precious 30 minutes for the doctors and nurses to attend and shift him to ICU.
The relatives requested the hospital authorities if the patient should be shifted to a competent hospital so that his life could be saved. The hospital authorities did not come up with any option in spite of staying in the ICU for 11 days but insisted that they have all the necessary facilities to take care of the patient.
Whenever, the troubled family members approached the doctors and nurses or the hospital authority for an update, they were plainly and vaguely told that he was still under critical condition.
Subsequently on February 8, at 8:20 pm, he succumbed to the drug reaction and medical negligence. The family of the demise and the Naga Students' Union, Bangalore, will not tolerate such an inhuman deal.
We have decided to approach all the concern forums, offices and institutions to conduct proper investigation for justice.
An FIR has been lodged against the Hospital authority for medical negligence.
