Campaign for Safety of Women in Delhi Continues
NE Helpline Delegation Met Home Ministry Official
Symposium Lined Up to Address Safety Concern for Women in Delhi
North East Support Centre & Helpline (NESC&H) continues to campaign for safety of women in Delhi. Delegation comprising of NESC&H, Jagori and Nirantar met Home Ministry Official. NESC&H has appealed student communities to join campaign against gendered-based violence faced by girls and women in Delhi and NCR particularly those from North East India.
A delegation of NESC&H, Jagori and Nirantar called upon Union Home Ministry to express concerns of safety for women in Delhi. Delegation met Joint Secretary Mr. M Gopal Reddy yesterday and submitted list of demands:
1. Fast Track Courts on cases of Sexual Assault for immediate and effective justice delivery,
2. Monitoring the effectives of the systems and processes already developed by Delhi government and police,
3. monitoring of helpline numbers and to get an actual picture of their responses,
4. transparency on follow up of cases of violence against women,
5. produce a 'white paper' on the registered cases with their updated status,
6. strict punishment for dereliction of duty by responsible officers in such cases,
7. A single unified helpline number across the country. Widespread information dissemination and publicity should be done on the proposed single number helpline and its services - on public hoardings, and through other media
8. Sensitisation and gender trainings of police personnel must be made compulsory, and done with the support of women's organisations
Mr. Madhu Chandra - Spokesperson of NESC&H says, 'Mr. Reddy took serious note of concerns expressed to Home Ministry Official, we trust that our demands will be taken up for consideration to include into plan of action to ensure safety of women in national capital.'
In another important development, Dr. John Dayal - Secretary General of All India Christian Council and Member of National Integration Council (Government of India) addressed to 6000 congregation at Manipur Catholic Mission Conference in Imphal, Manipur today. John Dayal says, 'In a key note, I have addressed to the crowd representing different tribes and communities from different district of Manipur that people from the region have been facing social profiling, which has become the root cause of racial discrimination and sexual harassment to girls from North East India in Delhi.'
Chief Minister Shri. O. Ibobi Singh was Chief Guest of the function. 'I have briefed to Mr. Ibobi about issues and problems faced by students and girls from Manipur at Delhi and NCR that his government should take up the matter to Prime Minister along with other North Eastern state governments,' says John Dayal.
Campaign continues to make Delhi safer for women, particularly those from North East India, who have become vulnerable to sexual harassment. North East Support Centre & Helpline have appealed to all section of student communities and civil societies to come up in strongest voice to oppose violence against women in national capital. In drive for safer Delhi for women, North East Support Centre & Helpline has been working closely with different colleges, NGOs, university student groups.
Advocate Lansinglu Rongmei - President of North East Support Centre & Helpline, Dr. Alana Golmei - Founder Member addressed safety concern and measurement with students from Indra Prasa College yesterday. Madhu Chandra also addressed with student leaders of Delhi University All India Student Associations at Ramjas College this afternoon. Series of seminars lined up by different college students and NGOs, which will take place in this month and January. The campaign for safety of women in Delhi began after gruesome crime of gang rape case of a 30 year old Mizo girl at Dhaul Kuan on midnight November 23.
Madhu Chandra says, 'We have met Delhi Police, Chief Minister of Delhi twice and Home Affair Ministry Officials demanding the government machineries to be more proactive to prevent crime against women and particularly those from North East India. We are grateful to Government and Police for the commitment they have taken, but they should continue to monitor those measurement round the week, month and year.'
North East Support Centre & Helpline (www.nehelpline.net) is a joint initiative of various human rights activists, social workers, students, journalists and lawyers seeking to prevent harassment and abuses meted out to North East People and tribal communities of other states.
