Best New Year Resolution For The State

It is common knowledge that New Year resolutions or promises or pledges normally do not last in most of the cases. That does not mean that we discourage people who want to change for the better. I have a heavy-smoker friend who always says he would stop smoking from the New Year; I always encourage him; indeed he usually stops smoking in the first few weeks of every New Year, then he resumes his habit sooner or later.

When I taunt him on his failure, his favorite response is just quoting Mark Twain who once said, “giving up smoking is easy, I have done it hundreds of times”. It is a beautiful thing that people want to do away bad things or to give up bad habits.

Resolutions are made to begin a new life with new hope and ambition. People are inherently good but quite often they fall prey to vices perhaps because of the environment, circumstances or peer pressures. Whether it is New Year or not if somebody wants to do something good, he or she must be encouraged and supported.

If our leaders, bureaucrats and police resolve that they will collectively curb malpractices from this year onwards, that will be the BEST NEW YEAR RESOLUTION FOR US.

IF THE TOP MAN TAKES A RESOLUTION OTHERS FOLLOW

I am not a great admirer of Arvind Kejriwal(Delhi Chief Minister) or Manick Sarkar(Tripura Chief Minister). But among the politicians their approach towards corruption is no doubt better than others. Why can’t we emulate them? Imitat- ing good things or habits or behavior is a virtue. If we start following impartial and clean practices while performing our duties, nothing like that. If the top man changes, others will follow suit.

Suppose a politician wants to give up his habit of taking money, he must be encouraged and appreciated. All of us much support him. His own constituency people should openly come out and acknowledge his good intention and support him whole-heartedly. He must be emancipated from his fear of losing next election. Politicians become money oriented because of apprehensions , like fear of losing next election, fear of losing minister-ship, fear of losing favor from the bosses or the high command.

WHO WILL START ?

The point I want to make is that normally we make pledges or promises which we fail to keep in the times to come. For that matter any resolution or any pledge is bound to be stalled because we lack determination and will power to sustain and maintain the same.

A police officer had the habit of chewing pan with tobacco .He wanted to give it up not because of the threat from some Nisha- bandh organization but on the basis of his dental health and economics. One day all of a sudden he stopped munching pan, incidentally that day was December 31st .

He told me, it has been almost 10 years since he last tasted pan. What a resolution? I tease him by inquiring whether he can give up the unauthorized monthly perks he is getting. He simply laughed and said ‘yes’ if everybody does. The issue is, who will start ?

ABRAHIM LINCOLN THE RESOLUTE MAN

If we go through the biography of Abraham Lincoln we realize that he was a man of strong determination and conviction. He was the man who abolished slavery in his country despite brute resistance from the powerful lobby of slave owners.

Lincoln had to fight against his colleagues and many powerful leaders who supported the continuance of slavery. It will be interesting to mention that he lost his first electoral race at the age 22; again defeated in a Congressional election at the age of 34; lost a Senatorial race at 49; but finally elected as the President of the United States of America. The highlighting point is, he refused to be led down by his successive electoral losses.

What we can learn from this man is, his resolute determination and conviction to lead the people of America for a better future.

WAITING FOR RESOLUTE LEADERS IN THIS NEW YEAR

Is there anyone in the State who is as resolute as Lincoln who can transit us out from this uncertain period to a more stable and peaceful era. There is no bar on age or sex or religion, we want strong leaders who can lead us to the right direction on the path of peace, progress and prosperity.

We have no hesitation to accept our old guards if they are ready to give up their bad habits. Anybody from the hills or from the valley who stands for peace and harmony and who stands for progress and prosperity shall be accepted.

People in the state desperately long for peace and harmony. For a change, we are eagerly waiting for good selfless leaders.

ARE WE WAITING FOR GODDOT? CERTAINLY NOT, THIS NEW YEAR WILL BRING OUT SOME GOOD LEADERS AND SOME EXISTING WILL EVOLVE FOR THE BETTER
