BACKGROUND OF THE ART GALLERY CUM MUSEUM:-
Three Mothers Art Gallery was established in the year 1978 and it was named THREE MOTHERS to signify "MOTHER OF SELF, MOTHER COUNTRY and MOTHER TONGUE" respectively.
Three Mothers Art Gallery cum Museum is situated at the Thangapat Mapal Palace Compound, Imphal East, Manipur and houses of the unique collection in root sculpture. The wide collection carvings depict a variety of themes from characters taken from the Manipur folklore, about the rich history of the state as well as the mythological beliefs of the colourful Manipuri culture.
MAN BEHIND THE ART GALLERY:-
Very lovely story how this MAN founded the Art Gallery in the state. Gurumayum Shyamsunder Sharma learned the art of sculpture making from his grandfather and the artwork at the gallery is all his vision and hard work. He usually sculpts from a single piece of root and integrates design with the natural shape of the root. He draws inspiration from his surroundings, both past and present.

Taohuireng Apanba, the Sun God, Meiteis believes the Sun God ride only one horse. But, in the mythology of the Hindu believe; the Sun God ride seven horses which represent the seven colours of the Iderdanush. Above the throne, there is which represent the time of sun as Mangang, Luwang and Khuman of the Meiteis believes.

This creative work is the representative symbol of Manipur under the British rule, the right hand was cut because the Kabaw Valley was given to the Burma (Myammar), the Govindaji Temple build during the reign of Maharaja Nara Singh at Kangla in 1846, and the chain shows the lost of independent.
