Imphal, July 25 2010:
First Olympian of the State, P Neelkamal will be the baton bearer of Manipur leg of the Queen's Baton Relay being organised across the country ahead of the Commonwealth Games scheduled in October this year at New Delhi.
Neelkamal was part of the Indian hockey team in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
The baton which will be brought to Imphal from Dimapur by air on July 27 will be handed over to the president of MOA.
The MOA president will then hand over the baton to the Chief Minister in a special function to be held at Kangla on the same day.
The CM will pass over the baton to the Sports Minister who will then hand it over to P Neelkamal.
The Manipur leg of the baton relay will be flagged off from Kangla by Chief Minister O Ibobi.
The baton would be taken to Mizoram on July 29 .
Beautification works like putting up gates, hoardings and cleaning of roads are being undertaken at different parts of Imphal through which the Queen's Baton Relay would pass.
On the other hand, a top official of the Manipur Olympic Association said that they would not take part in the scheduled Queen's Baton Relay.
Without consulting the MOA, the Sports Department only gave some invitation cards for distribution in connection with the baton relay, decried the official.
