Imphal, August 16, 2010:
Irom Sharmila, on an indefinite fast since November 2000 demanding repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, today donated 76 books of different kinds to the state Central Library.
The books were handed over to the chief librarian in-charge Soram Tampakleima at the security ward of the JNIMS where the Sharmila is under nasal fed for the last nearly 10 year for the cause of repeal of the draconian law.
The books she donated today where presented to her by well wishers since she launched the lone struggle of fasting.
Among others, it includes Long Walk of Freedom written by Nelson Mandela, Mahabharata of RK Narayan, An Open Heart of Dalai Lama, Geetanjali of Rabindranath Tagore, Listening to gas horns of Arundhati Roy, Meegi Manam of Thangjam Ibopishak, Phulan Devi written by herself etc.
The books have been presented to the library thinking that it would be better to give a chance to read these books by people instead of lying at her room, Sharmila said while presenting the books.
She further said that more than 30 books which she is still to read are in her custody.
After reading the book she will donate to the library, she added.
Expressing her gratitude in donating the books, Soram Tampakleima assured that the books will be kept at the library as "Sharmila's Collection".
