As part of the efforts being made under the Education Department of the State Government to set up one model school in each of the district, a Hill Government Model School has been inaugurated at Oinam Village in Senapati district yesterday even as the Purul Government High School in Purul village of Senapati has been upgraded to higher secondary school.
Constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 1 crore with funding from the Special Plan Assistance (SPA), the Oinam Hill Government Model School was inaugurated by Education Minister L Jayantakumar as chief guest.
The Education Minister also announced upgradation of Purul High School to Higher Secondary School in another function.
TD Minister DD Thaisii presided over both the functions which were also attended by Chairman of Hills Area Committee Thangminlien Haokip, Ex-Minister Francis Ngajokpa and Additional Director (Education Hill) C Hangshing as guests of honour.
Speaking at these functions, Jayantakumar said educational institutes are sacred temples through which developmental change and peace could be brought about in the society.
So it should be the responsibility of each one of us to ensure these store houses of knowledge are properly maintained and taken care of, he said.
The Minister further said that it should also be the collective responsibility of all to ensure the quality of education being imparted as education is the backbone of the society.
Admitting that education system in the State has deteriorated over the last 20 years as no corrective measures have been taken up on time, the Education Minister said forgetting the past everyone should now come together in exploring ways and means of improving the education system.
He also said that the Government is aware of the existing lack of infrastructure and teachers in Government schools and has accordingly taken up necessary steps to ensure adequate infrastructure and teachers in these schools.
To solve the problem of higher education being faced by the students in the hills, the Government has also started taking up steps for setting up higher secondary schools in each of the hill district.
As part of these measures, the Purul High School has been upgraded to the level of higher secondary.
Over and above this, necessary arrangements have been made for setting up a University, the Minister informed the gathering.
Ex-Education Minister Francis Ngajokpa said education is the most important element in any society and so if the quality of the education in the State is to be improved then no one should disturb the functioning of these educational institutions.
In his presidential address, TD Minister SS Thaisii reiterated that collective responsibility is essential for improving the quality of education in the State.
Students should also concentrate their mind in their studies and not waste their time, he advised.
