Detection of dependence on chemical drugs within the individual's body, which was virtually impossible till some time ago might soon become reality in Manipur with International Institute for De-addiction Research and Therapy (IIDRT) that has made rapid advances in the de-addiction strategies having expressed its willing to set up one of its unit here.
Talking to mediapersons here today, senior consultant Neuro Psychiatrist and founder chairman of IIDRT, New Delhi Dr Sanjay Chugh said he had been informed that the problem of drug abuse in Manipur is rampant and setting up a unit of the Institute at Imphal would be useful in solving the problem drug abuse or dependence of drug.
The Institute would like to set up a unit here if there is no objection, he added.
Dr Chugh, who has been doing research in the field of de-addiction/detoxification for the last two years, informed IIDRT has been using the Lateral Flow Chromatographic Immunoassay tests for detection of drugs and drug metabolites in human urine for some time now and found them to be highly sensitive and specific.
The Institute has successfully conducted tests on drugs of abuse like Cannabis (Charas/ Hashish/Hash, Ganja/Marijuana/Weed/Pot, Bhang), Opiates (Brown sugar/Smack, Heroin) Codeine/Deztromorphan, Fortwin, Pethidine, Buprenorphine, Proxyvon, Spasmoproxyvon, etc, Dr Chugh said, adding presence of Benzodiazepines (Sleeping Pills), Cocaine, Ecstasy (MDMA), Methamphetamines (YABA, ICE), Phencyclidine (PCP), Oxycontin (Oxycodone) Barbiturates, Buprenorphine, Amphetamines, etc in human body have also been detected successfully through testing.
