Imphal, October 29 2011:
A one-day fast and demonstration would be organised at the National level on November 5 under the aegis of Save Democracy, Repeal AFSPA (group).
Talking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here this afternoon, Save Democracy, Repeal AFSPA coordinator Seram Rojesh said that the one-day fast cum demonstration is being organised in commemoration of the people's long struggle against AFSPA and in solidarity to Irom Chanu Sharmila's crusade against the draconian Act.
He also appealed to all people including student organisations, civil society organisations, women groups, theatre activists, academicians and social activists to participate in the one-day fast cum demonstration.
This fast cum demonstration would be staged in Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, New Delhi, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Manipur, Tripura, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Gujarat and Bihar, Rojesh said.
Taking part in the press meet, vice president of the International League for Peace and Freedom Ila Pathak stated that military can never bring peace.
She demanded immediate scrapping of AFSPA.
Saying that the International League for Peace and Freedom has closed link with the United Nations, Ila Pathak claimed that the issue would be raised at international forums.
She also observed that the Government of India has been deliberately keeping the unsurpassed crusade of Irom Sharmila away from the attention of international media.
Even as the Justice Jeevan Reddy Committee has submitted its recommendations against the infamous Act, the Government of India has swept the recommendations under the carpet, Ila Pathak added.
