Imphal, December 09:
The six year long campaign of Irom Chanu Sharmila against the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958 is aimed at bringing peace in the trouble torn State, said national president of BJP Mahila Morcha Karuna Shukla.
She was speaking as chief guest at the one day Mahila Sammelan held at party's State unit office located at Nityaipat Chuthek.
Karuna noted that despite the massive protest movements undertaken by people over the years, the UPA and SPF Government were unwilling to repeal the infamous Act which has become an instrument for outraging modesty of numerous women.
Karuna, a Lok Sabha MP, hailed Manipuri women as courageous and patriotic and acknowledged outstanding feats of State sports women like Kunjarani, Mary Kom and L Sarita.
She said during NDA Govt, initiatives were taken to empower women.
She also conveyed satisfaction over roles being taken by Manipuri women in society and State politics.
Taking part in the Sammelan, national secretary and MP Tapir Gao alleged that both the Central and State Government are indulging in the game of divide and rule while deliberately staying away from development works.
Tapir noted many development schemes failed as the Government did not empower local bodies like the Panchayats.
Disclosing that BJP has been formulating a strategy to establish a non-Congress Govt in Manipur, BJP North East in-charge V Satish blamed the State Govt for its failure to address critical issues plaguing the State.
Secretary in-charge of Mahila Morcha M Sarda claimed that BJP is the only political organisation concerned for welfare of women.
The Sammelan adopted six different resolutions which included abolition of AFSPA, 33 percent reservation in State Assemblies and the Parliament, empowerment of Panchayats, establishment of women police stations in every district, preservation of the Nupi Keithel structure and identity and strengthening of BJP to ensure success of its candidates in the elections.
