Labourers engaged in the construction of a new police station at Yaingangpokpi in Ukhrul district left their work place following assault and threats by armed miscreants suspected to be cadres of the NSCN (IM) outfit, an official source said today.
The police source said that around 10 to 15 armed cadres of the outfit in combat dress and armed with assault rifles entered the makeshift lodging of the labourers at the Yaingangpokpi police station construction site on the evening of last Friday and assaulted them.
The cadres also destroyed some properties at the work site including newly constructed walls and materials inside the premises of the proposed police station.
Before leaving the place, they threatened the labourers to leave the place immediately with the warning that otherwise they would face dire consequences.
Fearful of the threats the labourers left the worksite, the report said.
Police has registered a case against the unknown assailants.
The construction of a police station at Yaingangpokpi in Ukhrul district bordering Imphal east district was in progress as part of opening 12 new police stations across the state particularly in the hill districts.
Manipur government has sanction Rs 66.46 crore for construction of 12 new police stations under the Special Plan Assistant, 2009-10 .
The 12 new police stations in the vulnerable areas of both valley and hill districts of the state, includes police stations at Yaingangpokpi, Maphou Dam, Boro Bekra at Jiribam sub-division in Imphal east district, Heirok, Khongjom, Hiyanglam, Wangoo in Thoubal district, Arong Nongmaikhong, Keibul Lamjao and Phoubakchao in Bishnupur district and Sanakeithel in Ukhrul district.
