Srinagar, October 24 2011:
Amidst a heightened debate over revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from parts of Jammu and Kashmir, army's northern commander Lt General KT Parnaik today met Governor NN Vohra here and briefed him on the security scenario in the state.
Parnaik met the Governor immediately after his arrival from the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir's Kupwara district, a defence spokesman said.
"The army commander called on Governor Vohra and apprised him of security scenario," the spokesman said.
Parnaik, who was accompanied to LoC by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the strategic Srinagar based 15 Corps Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain, was briefed on the operational preparedness and the security situation.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's announcement last week that AFSPA, which provides immunity to troops operating in the state, will be revoked from selected areas has set off a debate.
The Defence Ministry and the army have earlier said that discussions were underway on the issue of revoking the controversial Act from Jammu and Kashmir.
