Imphal, October 06:
Demanding extension of their service and increase of their pay, the part time lecturers of Government colleges today staged sit-in-protest at the campus of DM College of Sciences.
They have also decided to approach the President, Prime Minister and the AICC president Sonia Gandhi.
As per a State policy enforced in 1999, the posts of Government College part time lecturers were abolished.
About 466 part time lecturers have been demanding recreation of their posts.
Today's sit-in-protest was staged urging for extension of part time lecturers' service until a State policy to recreate their posts is framed and to revise their pay scale in the meantime to a viable scale.
President of the Government College Part Time Lecturers' Association, L Gojendra recalled that memoranda highlighting their woes and demands were submitted to the Chief Minister and the Education Minister on August 17 and September 1.However, there was no response from the State Government which compelled the part time lecturers to take classes wearing black badges from September 25 in protest against the indifference of the State Government.
On September 27, representatives of the association and the State Government talked again, but no tangible solution could be brought resulting in continuation of the part timers' stir, stated Gojendra.
He disclosed that they would approach the President, Prime Minister and the AICC president if the State Government fails to fulfil their demands at the earliest.
