Imphal, August 05 2009:
In protest against imposition of curfew by the Government to suppress the public agitation over the July 23 fake encounter incident at BT Road, All Communities United Front (ACUF) has called a 24-hour general strike with effect from 5 pm today.
Talking to mediapersons in this connection, somewhere in Imphal West district today, general secretary of ACUF L Mangal said imposition of curfew in Imphal East and Imphal West District by the Government to suppress the agitation of the people over the July 23 fake encounter at crowded BT Road which killed two persons including a pregnant woman and wounded five other people is not a wise decision.
With compelling evidences coming up against the criminal conduct of the police commandos, the Government would not be able to protect them any more, Mangal said, adding that the decision to call the general strike against imposition of curfew has been adopted as the Government has failed to institute a judicial inquiry and punish guilty police commandos within deadline of August 5 given earlier.
Mangal also warned of taking recourse to various intense agitation including boycott of Government offices, if the Government fails to give a positive response to the demand of the people.
