While the whole country is preparing to celebrate the 59th Republic Day, human rights activists and a large number of Manipuri people affected by the Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 took out a protest rally at Delhi.
In a highly symbolic and significant protest movement, a large number people staged a protest sitting at Jantar Mantar at about 1 pm against the continued imposition of the AFSPA 1958 and the alleged increasing militarization in the NE region, particularly in Manipur.

Among others, the protesters include members of the Working Committee of the Apunba Lup and volunteers and activists of various Delhi based civil organisations, informed a statement issued by the Apunba Lup.
The protesters held placards and festoons which read as, "Repeal AFSPA from Manipur, "Stop State Terrorism in Manipur", "Ensure Fundamental Rights to Manipuris", etc.
They also asserted that January 26 (Republic Day) is the day of protest for Manipuris against atrocities perpetrated by security forces behind AFSPA.
Shouting the same slogans, around 300 strong protesters marched from Jantar Mantar to Mandir Marg, Gole Market under the aegis of the Apunba Lup. Today's protest movement against the infamous military Act on the eve of the Republic Day was supported and participated by the different organisations and NGOs based in different parts of the country such as Reach Out, Saheli, The Other Media, Lok Raj Sangathan, Impulse, Peoples Watch, Borok Peoples Human Rights Organisation, Asha Parivar, National Alliance for Peoples Movement, Human Rights Law Network, Humanity Organisation Helpline NGO (Jammu and Kashmir), Teesta Setalvad Anand, Communalism Combat (Mumbai), Citizen for Justice and Peace (Mumbai), Peoples Union for Democratic Rights etc, added the statement.
